Worried about the privacy implications of your face being plastered across the internet? New artificial intelligence (AI) can now automatically anonymize photos and videos by replacing faces with artificially generated ones, MIT Technology Review reports. The software, described in a paper on arXiv, considers the subject’s pose and background to render a new face that blends seamlessly with the original picture. Unlike other anonymization approaches like blurring and pixelation, the output looks realistic and the process doesn’t change the underlying statistical features of the image data. Considering AI can identify people from ears alone, however, it’s unclear how much protection the approach will provide.
