Crows sometimes mate with corpses

For some crows, first date behavior comes after their partner’s expiration date, The Atlantic reports. In a study on crow’s responses to seeing their dead flock mates, researchers noted that birds often gather to examine corpses and learn about potential threats. But the encounters turned sexual in a small percentage of cases, with live birds attempting to mate with the dead. According to the scientists, crows could be overwhelmed by the conflicting hormones trigged by seeing a corpse during their mating season, and are unable to choose the correct behavioral response for the situation.
