Study says Exxon misled the public about climate change

For nearly 4 decades, oil and gas giant Exxon has misled the public about the causes and risks of climate change, according to a new study that analyzed 187 public and private Exxon communications from 1977 to 2014, CNN reports. Researchers found that although Exxon scientists and executives acknowledged in private that global warming is real and human-caused, the company spent thousands of dollars on editorial-style newspaper advertisements casting doubt on the science. In a New York Times op-ed posted this week, the researchers write that Exxon “contributed quietly to climate science and loudly to raising doubts about it.” Exxon, which is being investigated by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman for allegedly concealing the risk of climate change, dismissed the findings, pointing out that the company has also published advertisements addressing the long-term risk of climate change.
