Researchers have discovered a new type of matter and its name sounds like pure science fiction. Time crystals, “a collection of quantum particles that constantly changes, and never reaches a steady state,” display a new kind of order, once thought to be impossible, Nature writes. Scientists created the time crystals using lasers to flip the spin of ions, generating an oscillation that the crystals maintained without requiring additional energy. Just as the atoms in familiar crystals are resilient to changes in space, time crystals seem to steadfastly hold their set pulse. Researchers suggest the discovery could help advance quantum computing.
