Certain hairstyles that pull tightly on the scalp may contribute to gradual hair loss, The Root reports. Hairstyles common among African-American women such as extensions, braids, dreadlocks, and weaves often fall into that category, and this could be the reason why about a third of black women suffer from hair loss caused by pulling, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. These tight hairstyles can be even more damaging when worn in chemically straightened hair. The findings are prompting scientists to take on the odd role of coiffure consultants, as they urge people to wear looser hairdos and to keep braids and extensions in for just a few months.
