Nicolas Cage has agreed to return one of Mongolia’s national treasures: the skull of a Tyrannosaurus bataar, a relative of the T. rex found only in Mongolia, Reuters reports. The skull was smuggled illegally from the Gobi desert, and Cage purchased it at auction in 2007 for $276,000. Cage, who is not accused of any wrongdoing, agreed to hand over the skull when he learned where it came from, according to authorities. The incident highlights a larger struggle to keep valuable fossils from disappearing into private collections, where researchers are unable to study them.
