Ancient galaxy is the farthest ever seen

Astronomers have discovered a bright galaxy that is the most distant one yet to be measured, Yale University announced today. The study, published online today in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, describes how the researchers used the powerful MOSFIRE instrument on the W. M. Keck Observatory’s 10-meter telescope in Hawaii to peer into a time when the universe was still very young and see what the galaxy looked like only 670 million years after the big bang. Continuing to measure galaxies very far away and describing their properties will be an important part of astronomy in the coming years, the researchers say.
