Corks keep wine fresh and flavorful—without them, wine lovers would be at a loss. But new research suggests they’re headed downhill; the trees used to make them are slowly losing quality and sprouting up with thin bark, Discovery News reports. Corkmakers require bark that’s 27 millimeters thick, but many of the trees—named Quercus suber—now have bark that grows only as thick as 10 millimeters. Some scientists think that climate change is to blame; the trees may be changing in response to warmer temperatures and increased exposure to ultraviolet light.
