Sixth-grader makes lionfish breakthrough

One of the world’s most venomous saltwater fish is much more of a threat than previously thought. New research shows that lionfish can survive in fresh water that’s one-seventh the salinity of the Atlantic Ocean, meaning the invasive fish could potentially spread into rivers. The finding is all thanks to a curious sixth-grader who conducted a science project where she slowly diluted the salt water in tanks containing lionfish, reports. Researchers at North Carolina State University have followed up on the project to confirm her results.
