Disco clams got their name for a reason. The entertaining sea creatures put on mini–light shows with what looks like electricity, but it’s far from it. The clams actually have two different tissue types on their lips that can reflect light, creating the bright flashes that everyone loves to watch, National Geographic reports. The researchers, who published their work online this week in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, suggest the bright glows help ward off enemies.
