Physicists Recreate a Supernova in the Lab

Astronomers no longer have to observe supernovas from galactic distances; they can just create them on their tabletops. Physicists at the University of Oxford manufactured a miniature supernova firsthand with the help of intense laser beams that are 60,000 billion times more powerful than a laser pointer. The phenomenon, described online this week in Nature Physics, occurred after heating a rod to millions of degrees with the lasers, leading to its explosion into a gas that mimics stellar blasts, the Daily Mail reports.
