Mountaintop blasted for world's largest telescope

A blast of explosives trimmed some height from a 3000-meter-tall mountain this week, but it wasn’t for naught. The newly flattened plateau in the Chilean Andes will soon be the home of the European Extremely Large Telescope, The Guardian reports. Once complete in 2023, it will be the world’s biggest telescope, offering images that are 16 times sharper than those captured by the Hubble Space Telescope.
