Pigs Could Become Organ Donors

Pig hearts could one day be transplanted into humans waiting for organ donations, The Telegraph reports. A pig heart that was genetically modified to be more compatible with primates is still beating in a baboon a year after it was transplanted. While the organ was placed alongside the baboon’s actual heart, the next step will be to test if it can provide full life support on its own. Researchers reported their success at this week’s meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
