Captured: First Photos of Space's 'Dim Matter'

Astronomers have captured the first images of intergalactic medium, a gas that fills the space between all the galaxies in the universe. Also called dim matter, the structure of intergalactic medium has been speculated about since the 1980s, io9 reports. Analyses of the 3D images finally reveal that the gas is not distributed evenly across space, but rather flows through channels that are spread across the universe. The shots were taken with the California Institute of Technology’s Palomar Cosmic Web Imager.
