Why You Shouldn't Pee in the Pool

Besides the fact that urinating in a swimming pool is just plain gross, here’s another reason not to do it: It’s dangerous. Scientists have found that when urine and chlorine combine, they create potentially hazardous byproducts, including cyanogen chloride and trichloramine. The former is a toxic compound that can affect the lungs, heart, and central nervous system after being inhaled, while the latter has been associated with acute lung injury, researchers report in Environmental Science & Technology.
