'Prehuman' Soil Discovered Inside an Ice Core

Soil that dates back to before human existence has been unearthed, LiveScience reports. Drilling more than 3 kilometers into the Greenland Ice Sheet, researchers from the University of Vermont were surprised to find 2.7-million-year-old sand frozen within an ice core. The findings, published online this week in Science, suggest the ice sheet has been around for a lot longer than previously thought, and that it endured through multiple periods of global warming in the past.
