Most Americans Question the Big Bang

Fifty-one percent of Americans are either “not too confident” or “not at all confident” that the universe began with a bang, according to a new poll. Although scientists are disappointed with the response, The Atlantic reports that the results aren’t really surprising. Between 1990 and 2010, a survey by the National Science Board found that only 32% to 38% of the U.S. population believed the theory was true. On the other hand, 82% of us are extremely or very confident that smoking causes cancer, while 71% are extremely or very sure that mental illness is a medical condition that affects the brain.
