As officials scramble to find wreckage from the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, one truth is emerging: Our oceans are filthy. So far, discarded fishing equipment, cargo container parts, and plastic shopping bags have been mistaken for airline debris floating in the sea, National Geographic reports. Five massive garbage patches, regions where objects dropped into the ocean accumulate, now exist in the seas—one of which is the size of Texas.
