How Many Bubbles Are in Your Bubbly?

Without its fizz and bubbles, champagne would just be another glass of wine. But just how many bubbles are in your glass of bubbly? Wine experts had estimated 15 million, but it looks like they were way off; there are about 1 million. To make the calculation, a chemist created a mathematical formula that considers multiple factors, including champagne temperature, bubble dynamics, and tilt of the glass when pouring. According to the researcher, the results—published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry B—are more accurate because previous calculations did not consider that some carbon dioxide escapes from the glass without forming bubbles.
