Do Babies Cry at Night to Prevent More Siblings?

When a baby cries out at night, moms dutifully rush to the crib to soothe. But why do infants wake up screaming, anyway? Contrary to the belief that they’re hungry or lonely, a Harvard University scientist says that wailing babies are trying to distract mom from getting pregnant again, Science News reports. The theory, described in Evolution, Medicine, and Public Health, suggests that babies are programmed to try to keep mom and dad all to themselves and prevent the creation of siblings.
