Cap'n Crunch Is Keeping an Eye on Your Child

There’s a reason Cap’n Crunch has a downward gaze in the breakfast aisle; he’s got his eye on your kids. After studying 65 cereals in various grocery stores, researchers have found that the spokescharacters of cereals marketed toward children typically have a downward gaze of 9.67° to make eye contact with children. The findings, published this week in Environment & Behavior, reveal that eye contact influences feelings of trust and connection with the brand, making kids go “cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.” According to LA Weekly, characters who make eye contact include Cap’n Crunch, the Trix Rabbit, Toucan Sam, and Count Chocula.
