You Can Map the Moon Like an Expert, Too

Moon mapping isn’t just for experienced astronomers anymore. Scientists working with CosmoQuest—a site that uses crowdsourcing to help advance astronomy—have discovered that almost anyone can map the moon with the same precision as experts. The study, published this month in Icarus, found that citizen mappers were just as good as the experts in using imagery to recognize and identify some of the moon’s 500 million craters. And with new data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter coming in daily, researchers say citizen scientists can play a big role in making moon maps more accurate and complete.
