What Happens When You Combine Art and Math?

A mathematical masterpiece! Scientists and artists who are interested in linking their disciplines to create visual art are brought together annually at the Bridges conference to display their work, Discover reports. In this case, we’re looking at a visualization of six routes that 1000 ants took after leaving their nest in search of food. The jagged blue lines represent the breaking off of random ants in search of seeds. The piece was created with a computer-generated algorithm that was based on the behaviors. Check out this online gallery that highlights some other mathematically appealing entries in last year’s conference.
