Oceans May Help Clean Up Smog

There might be some hope for smoggy cities near the sea. A new study has found that at night the surface of the ocean absorbs up to 15% of smog-forming nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere, the Los Angeles Times reports. Researchers made the discovery after deploying scientific instruments that measure the exchange of gases between the air and water and published their results this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Although scientists say the findings are important, they add that further quantifications are necessary to determine exactly how beneficial the process is to air quality.
