Future Winter Olympics in Jeopardy

Snow and chilly temperatures are indispensable traits of the Winter Olympics. But new climate change research is casting some doubt on which countries may be able to host the games in the future. According to researchers, nine of the previous 19 host locations, including Sochi, Russia, Vancouver, Canada, and Grenoble, France, will no longer be suitable for the games by the 2050s, and as few as six will be fit by the 2080s. The study, published in Current Issues in Tourism, did not consider the fate of Pyeongchang, South Korea, which is set to host the next games in 2018. Suitability was assessed by considering future greenhouse gas emission scenarios and how they would affect temperature and snow depth.
