Middle Earth's Smaug Not So Bad for the Environment

We all know that smog is bad for the environment—but what about Smaug? A new tongue-in-cheek analysis of Middle Earth’s famous dragon suggests that the beast’s methane-rich fire breath is only a minimal contributor to the fantasy world’s greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, according to a blog posted last week by the Climate Systems Analysis Group, the horses of the Riders of Rohan have a much greater carbon footprint; they produce the methane emissions of more than 68 dragons.
