Tornado Hunters Loose Next Month

VORTEX2, a 1-month research project on how tornadoes work, begins in May and will cover 1450 kilometers of the central United States, from the Dakotas down to the Texas panhandle. Scientists on the project will study tornadoes as they begin and cease, severe thunderstorms, and the relationship between the two phenomena. "Verification of Rotation in Tornadoes EXperiment2 is the largest and most ambitious attempt to study tornadoes in history and will involve more than 50 scientists and 40 research vehicles, including 10 mobile radars," says the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a sponsor along with the National Science Foundation and some nonprofit groups.
