Academy Elects Members

WASHINGTON, D.C.--The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) yesterday announced the election of 60 new members and 15 foreign associates, including British mathematician Roger Penrose. Membership is considered one of the highest honors accorded to a scientist.

The academy is a private organization that, among other things, advises the federal government on issues relating to science or technology. Those elected yesterday raise the number of current active members to 1798. A list of new members can be found at the NAS Web site.
