Anne Forde, Ph.D.

After completing her Ph.D. in immunology at the University of Dublin in 1996, Dr. Forde moved to Germany into a three-year postdoctoral position. Although she enjoyed the research and loved the lab atmosphere, she didn’t feel that she had the passion or talent to become a principal investigator. After a year of exploring various career options in science communication, Dr. Forde accepted a part-time position as a German correspondent for the career development website Science Careers (part of AAAS) which evolved into a full-time job the following year. She particularly loved the networking and communication element of science writing but still sought a more people-focused job. In 2006, Dr. Forde joined the University of Cambridge Careers Service as a careers adviser for life science postdocs, where she currently supports postdocs wishing to secure academic roles, in addition to those hoping to move outside academia.

Jonathan Weitzman, Ph.D.

Dr. Weitzman obtained his B.Sc. in Biochemistry at the University of Manchester, UK, followed by a Ph.D./D.Phil. at the MRC Immunochemistry Unit, University of Oxford, UK. He carried out his postdoctoral research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School in Boston in the US, working on integrin cell adhesion molecules. Before becoming a professor, Dr. Weitzman held a faculty position at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and led a group working on signaling pathways. He is currently a professor of genetics at the Université Paris Diderot, Paris 7, France, and also Director of the Centre of Epigenetics and Cell Fate, a newly formed research centre created by the University and the CNRS national research council in 2009. The research centre currently consists of seven groups studying epigenetic mechanisms regulating cellular differentiation programs. Dr. Weitzman’s research career has focused on understanding cancer progression by studying cell adhesion, signal transduction and epigenetic mechanisms that contribute to tumor phenotypes. 

Prof. Hermann Bujard

Director, EMBO
Heidelberg, Germany

Professor Bujard received his diploma in organic chemistry in 1960 and his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in 1962. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin in the United States, as well as Assistant Professor at the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies in Dallas before returning to Germany in 1969 as Professor of Molecular Genetics at the University of Heidelberg. In 1982, he joined F. Hoffmann La Roche Ltd. in Basel, Switzerland, as head of biological research but in 1986 moved to the University of Heidelberg to be the first director of the Center for Molecular Biology (ZMBH). Prof. Bujard joined the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in July 2007 as Director, but he still maintains an active research laboratory at ZMBH. Prof. Bujard is widely published and holds 25 international patents. He has served on numerous international scientific committees and advisory boards. 

Ava Yeo, Ph.D.

Director of Operations, Cancer Research UK

Dr. Yeo obtained her Ph.D. in immunology from King’s College Medical School in the UK and worked as a researcher at St. Mary’s Hospital, London, in the area of autoimmune rheumatoid arthritis. In 1994, she moved into academic administration as the faculty of life sciences operating officer at Imperial College, London, before moving to the London Research Institute (LRI) in 2004. Currrently, Dr. Yeo is the director of operations for Cancer Research UK, LRI, which undertakes biological research relating to cancer. She has day-to-day responsibility for the operation of the LRI which hosts 50 group leaders, 100 graduate students, and 200 postdoctoral research fellows supported by a further 150 staff providing core technology facilities. She has overseen the implementation of an innovative graduate recruitment and training programme which was awarded the Association of University Administrators Award for Excellence in 2008. 

Sean Sanders, Ph.D.

Washington, DC

Dr. Sanders did his undergraduate training at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, UK, supported by the Wellcome Trust. Following postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health and Georgetown University, Dr. Sanders joined TranXenoGen, a startup biotechnology company in Massachusetts working on avian transgenics. Pursuing his parallel passion for writing and editing, Dr. Sanders joined BioTechniques as an editor, before joining Science/AAAS in 2006. Currently, Dr. Sanders is the Director and Senior Editor for Custom Publishing for the journal Science and Program Director for Outreach.
