Science Transforming Medicine

This year Science Translational Medicine celebrates its 10th anniversary. As part of the celebration, we are publishing a special Focus series entitled “Science Transforming Medicine”, which each month will highlight important advances in a particular translational research field achieved over the past decade. Each Focus article covers a different field and features a paper within that field that was published in Science Translational Medicine during the early years of the journal. The experts authoring each Focus article discuss how the field, therapy, or topic covered in that early Science Translational Medicine paper has advanced over the past decade. Focus article authors discuss the research advances made and the barriers still to be surmounted to translate these advances into improved treatments for patients. Launching this special Focus series is an article by Zmora et al. that discusses a paper published in 2009 by Peter Turnbaugh and colleagues showing how the gut microbiota influences adiposity. Zmora et al. take us on a journey through the past decade, looking at how the study of the microbiome has culminated in new clinical treatments such as fecal microbiota transplantation. Access the Zmora et al. Focus below as well as articles on CAR T cells, bioelectronics, and tuberculosis vaccines. Watch for future articles on liquid biopsies, regulatory science, tissue engineering, and more.
