Reporting from the frontlines: The critical role of secondary antibodies in infectious disease immunoassays

For over 40 years, immunoassays—biochemical tests that use the specificity of an antibody–antigen reaction to detect and quantify target macromolecules in biological samples—have been used in laboratory medicine and research. These methods are often used in clinical diagnostics, drug discovery, drug monitoring, and food and water testing. Recently, immunoassays—and their main workhorses, secondary antibodies—have gained even more prominence for their key role in detecting HIV and SARS-CoV-2 viruses, as shown in the articles accompanying this supplement.
