Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a phosphaturic factor produced by bone cells and shown to act on the renal tubule and the parathyroid gland. An excess or lack of FGF23 can cause a number of chronic disorders. In this supplement, we present a series of articles that exemplify advances in FGF23 research, including a review that summarizes recent research on targets for therapeutic intervention in FGF23 signaling pathways, and three seminal articles on FGF23 published in the Science family of journals in the last two years. Collectively, these articles point to the role of this important molecule in a number of critical pathways essential for human health and well-being.
