There are many cogent arguments for supporting bench-to-bedside—or translational—research. Taxpayers demand, and funding entities often require, that the money spent on research generates some application in the future, whether that be a drug, a therapy, or a medical device that ultimately benefits patients. But the path from the laboratory bench to the clinic is not always an easy one. In this supplement, we have gathered a unique collection of papers from Science Translation Medicine that highlight some of the challenges inherent in bench-to-bedside research and provide helpful insights into possible paths to improve the chances for its success through cooperation and partnerships.
