GrantsNet, Science Careers' funding database, currently has a number of scholarships, fellowships, and research support programs designated for ethnic minorities and women. Check back periodically for updates to this list.

A. Undergraduate students, including entering freshmen (sorted by application deadline date)

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

  • Gates Millennium Scholars Program. The Gates Millennium Scholars program provides outstanding African Americans, American Indian/Alaska natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic Americans an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in all disciplines. Deadline: 2008-01-11

National Society of Black Physicists

  • Arthur BC Walker Scholarship. Declared physics majors in their junior or senior year are eligible to receive this $1000 scholarship. Applicants should be either sophomores or juniors. Deadline: 2008-01-12

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education

American Meteorological Society

  • AMS Freshman Undergraduate Scholarship. The American Meteorological Society (AMS) offers scholarships of $2000 for the junior year and a subsequent $2000 for the senior year. Second-year funding is based on the recipient's performance and the recommendation of a faculty adviser. AMS encourages applications from women, minorities, and disabled students traditionally underrepresented in the atmospheric and related oceanic sciences. Deadline: 2008-02-08

  • AMS Undergraduate Scholarships. The AMS also awards undergraduate scholarships to students entering their final year in the fall. Deadline: 2008-02-08

  • AMS Industry Minority Scholarships. The AMS Industry Minority Scholarships also offers funding to students from underrepresented minorities specifically. Students must plan to pursue careers in the atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences. The 2-year scholarships are for $3000 per year (freshman and sophomore years) and are supported by industry. Deadline: 2008-02-08

Institute of International Education

  • Gilman International Scholarship Program. The Gilman International Scholarship Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Applications for the fall 2008 term are available in February 2008.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

  • Gates Millennium Scholars Program. The Gates Millennium Scholars program provides outstanding African Americans, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete a graduate education in mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library science. Deadline: 2008-01-11

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education

  • Student Research Participation at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. This program provides opportunities to participate in research relating to exposure and disease registries, health investigations, public health assessments, toxicological profiles, emergency response, and health education. The duration of the program is from 10 weeks to 12 months, with full-time or part-time appointments. There is a stipend based on research area(s) and academic classification. Deadline: 2008-02-08

American Indian Graduate Center

  • AIGC Fellowship Program. The American Indian Graduate Center was founded to help open the doors to graduate education for American Indians as well as help tribes obtain the educated Indian professionals they need to become more self-sufficient and exercise their rights to self-determination. More details and an application form will be available in mid-January 2008. Deadline: 2008-06-02

  • Accenture American Indian Scholarship - Graduate. Seeking to select the very brightest American Indian and Alaska Native students wishing to pursue degrees and careers in all fields of study, including high technology and business fields. This scholarship is funded by Accenture and administered by the America Indian Graduate Center. Deadline: 2008-06-02

  • Wells Fargo American Indian Scholarship - Graduate. To be considered for the Wells Fargo scholarship, an applicant must be an enrolled member of a United States federally recognized American Indian tribe or Alaska Native group, be a full-time and degree-seeking graduate student at a U.S. accredited college or university, have a cumulative average GPA of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application, and have a demonstrated financial need. Deadline: 2008-06-02

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education

  • U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission HBCUs Student Research Participation. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Historically Black Colleges and Universities Research Participation Program offers opportunities for faculty and students to participate in research education and training at federal facilities or designated university research programs. Sessions are typically 10 to 12 weeks for summer appointments, but some part-time appointments of one year are also available. A full-time weekly stipend of $600 for graduate students (and $500 for undergraduates), as well as limited travel reimbursement are offered. Deadline: Applications accepted year-round

Funding, and other forms of support


  • Windsor Fellowship. The organization supports black and Asian students in the U.K. through development and training programmes that include paid industrial placement for undergraduates, workshops in transferable skills, and opportunities for work experience for soon-to-be or recent graduates.

  • Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Through its MOSAIC programme, NWO offers funding to resident ethnic minorities to do a Ph.D. programme, as well as mentoring them during the application process, which includes putting together a research proposal with a prospective supervisor.


  • Diversity Milkround is an employment site for employers known for sound diversity employment practices.

  • Race for Opportunity gathers private and public sector organisations working across the U.K. to promote the business case for race and diversity.



  • 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All. This year, the European Union is running many initiatives at European and national levels to raise awareness about discrimination, inform minorities of their rights, and stimulate a social debate on how diversity may be promoted.

  • KAL Magazine: A magazine for ethnic minority students and graduates (U.K.).
