Qatar’s fight for future water security

The tiny Gulf nation of Qatar and its 2.8 million residents face water security challenges on multiple fronts including a limited supply of groundwater, a dropping water table, minimal rainfall, and a per capita water usage rate similar to that of the U.S.  Desalination currently provides the majority of the fresh water, but is this energy intensive process the best solution? What new technologies can be brought to bear that will provide a more secure water future?
