HKIAS at CityU is finding solutions to society's challenges (Advertorial series)

The Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has invited top researchers to present a series of lectures, supported in part by the Kwang Hua Educational Foundation, that outline potential solutions to society's challenges.  Here we provide summaries of these lectures, spanning 2020 and 2021.  The first part of the series covers two lectures that describe how systems engineering can aid in managing the COVID pandemic and the development of new materials that will improve a broad range of technologies, from smartphones to new artificial joints. The second part summarizes lectures in mathematics concerning nonlinear Korn inequalities and in materials science about the challenges of developing new materials for the aerospace industry.
