Scientific research is seldom a solo endeavor. Instead, it most often requires the collaboration of many minds, frequently across great distances and geographical boundaries. The Advanced Technologies in Biomedicine summit that took place in Beijing, China, in November, 2019, brought together top biomedical researchers from China and the world to discuss successes and challenges in translating basic research advances into practical clinical applications now and in the future. Part of the Beijing International Academic Season (BAS) hosted by the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, the summit touched on many important topics including the practice and ethics of genome editing, genetic testing in utero, and growing vital organs for transplantation, all with the ultimate aim of improving public health and quality of life.
