Terms and Conditions of Subscription

  1. Copyright Notice

    Although there is no charge for the use of some portions of the materials contained on the Science websites ("Websites"), all the materials are protected under copyright and other laws of the United States, and, under international conventions, similar laws abroad. Please respect the copyrights and related rights of the authors and publishers of the Websites.

    Copyright in the materials contained on the Science Websites, including, but not limited to, the textual material, artwork, photographs, computer software, audio and visual elements, is owned or controlled separately (and as a collective work exclusively) by the American Association for the Advancement of Science ("AAAS").

  2. Limitations on Use by (and to) Registered Users

    The contents of the Websites as available through the Free Service, may only be accessed, viewed or otherwise used by a Registered User. A Registered User is permitted to view, browse and/or download for temporary copying purposes only the contents of the Websites, provided these uses are for noncommercial personal purposes, and further provided that the Registered User maintains all copyright and any other notices, on all copies. Registered Users are not, however, permitted to store in electronic or any other form, any significant portion of the Websites. Except as provided by law or by this Agreement, the contents of the Websites may not be further reproduced, distributed, transmitted, modified, adapted, performed, displayed (including adaptations/displays such as by "framing"), published or sold in whole or in part, without the prior written permission from AAAS.

    Any use which is commercial and/or non-personal is strictly prohibited, and may subject the Registered User making such uses to immediate revocation of access to this Free Service, as well as any other applicable civil or criminal penalties. Similarly, sharing a Registered User password with a non-Registered User or otherwise making this Free Service available to third parties is strictly prohibited, and may subject the Registered User participating in such activities to immediate revocation of access to this Free Service; and, the Registered User and any third party, to any other applicable civil or criminal penalties.

    In the case of an authorized site license, a Registered User shall cause any employee, agent or other third party which the Registered User allows to use the Free Service materials to abide by all of the terms and conditions of this Agreement. In all other cases, only the Registered User is permitted to access the Free Service materials.

  3. Trademark Notice

    AAAS®, Science®, ScienceNOW, Science Careers, Science Signaling, Science Translational Medicine, and SAGE KE are trademarks of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Any use of the marks AAAS®, Science®, ScienceNOW, Science Careers, Science Signaling, Science Translational Medicine, and SAGE KE in connection with the sale, offering for sale, distribution or advertising of any goods and services, including any other website, or in connection with labels, signs, prints, packages, wrappers, receptacles or advertisements used for the sale, offering for sale, distribution or advertising of any goods and services, including any other website, which is likely to cause confusion, to cause mistake or to deceive, is strictly prohibited.

  4. No Endorsements

    Any use of "AAAS" or, of any text or other material, in whole or in part, contained in the Websites in any manner to express or imply endorsement, sponsorship, affiliation, connection, or association of the Registered User by or with AAAS, or to cause confusion, to cause mistake, or to deceive as to the origin, sponsorship or approval of the Registered User's goods, services or commercial activities with AAAS, is strictly prohibited.

  5. Modification of Terms and Conditions

    AAAS reserves the right at its discretion to change, modify, add or remove the Terms and Conditions for this Free Service at any time. Such changes shall be posted on the Science Websites, and all Registered Users shall be notified of such changes. A Registered User's continued use of the Free Service following the posting and such notification of any change to these Terms and Conditions will constitute acceptance by the Registered User of the Terms and Conditions as modified.

  6. Modification of Website or Free Service

    AAAS reserves the right to change, modify, suspend or discontinue any or all parts of the Science Websites or the Free Service at any time. AAAS reserves the right to restrict a Registered User's access to parts or all of the Free Service without notice or liability.

  7. Representations and Warranties

    The Registered User represents, warrants, and covenants that nothing uploaded, distributed or published on the AAAS Science Websites through the Registered User's account will be libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, abusive or invade the rights of privacy or other personal or property rights or infringe the copyright or trademark of any person or entity. The Registered User shall indemnify, defend and hold AAAS harmless from any damages, expenses and costs (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of any breach or alleged breach of these Terms and Conditions, representations and/or warranties herein, by the Registered User or any third party to whom Registered User shares her/his password or otherwise makes available this Free Service. The Registered User shall cooperate in the defense of any claim brought against AAAS.

  8. Forums, "Chat Rooms" and e-mail/Web Discussion Groups

    As part of the Subscription, a Registered User will have access to forums, "chat rooms," and e-mail/Web discussion groups to which the Registered User will be able to send messages and other content. AAAS is not obligated to post all comments from Registered Users. AAAS also has the right to remove, or simply not to post any comment it deems to be, or believes others may deem to be, offensive, libelous, slanderous or otherwise illegal. A notice of these terms of usage will be posted at each discussion group. Registered Users shall remain solely responsible for the content of their messages. The Registered User warrants that any and all moral rights in any uploaded materials have been waived.

    AAAS shall not be responsible for communications or activities occurring outside the context of a forum, "chat room," or e-mail/Web discussion group even if such communication or activity commences or continues in the context of a forum, "chat room," or e-mail/Web discussion group. The Registered User further represents and warrants to AAAS that forums, "chat rooms," or e-mail/Web discussion groups on the Science Websites will not be used for the solicitation of funds, advertising or solicitation for goods or services. The Registered User shall indemnify and hold AAAS harmless from any damages, expenses and costs (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of any breach or alleged breach of the Registered User's representations and warranties in this section.

  9. Registration

    To register, Registered User must assent to these Terms and Conditions by clicking on the "Submit" button on the registration page, and must provide AAAS with accurate and complete registration information. Failure to provide accurate and complete information, and failure to timely update the information requested on the registration form may result in delays in establishing Registered User access to the Free Service, AAAS' denial of an application or the revocation of Registered User access to the Free Service.

  10. Security

    As part of the registration process, one applying to be a Registered User will be asked to select a password and Registered User name. Knowing use of the Registered User name of another or the selection of a name which AAAS deems offensive may result in termination of access to the Free Service.
