Using laser scanning confocal microscopy, Marna Ericson captured this image of a common deer tick feasting on the ear of a golden hamster. The colors in the image are dominated by the natural autofluorescence of the tick's mouth parts. Understanding that natural palatte will help in selecting the "right" color for genetically engineered fluorescent versions of tickborne bacteria that can be used to learn more about the pathogens' transmission dynamics.
