Bordered by Algeria to the west and Libya in the southeast, Tunisia is the northernmost African country and home to some 10 million people. Although its land area is relatively small, Tunisia is geographically diverse. In the north, a narrow coastal strip is backed by mountains. Mountains and plateaus mark the central and western region, and steppe or desert bordering the Sahara make up the south.
