With a population around 12 million and an area of 1.24 million square kilometers, Mali is situated in the heart of western Africa. The borders of this landlocked country include Algeria in the north and northwest, Niger in the east, the Ivory Coast and Guinea to the south, and Senegal and Mauritania to the west.
