Why are loons abandoning their nests?

Loons in Wisconsin are abandoning their nests and the eggs within them at astonishing rates, but what exactly are they running from? Wildlife scientists have observed mass numbers of black flies swarm the birds, pestering and nipping at them until they just can’t stand it anymore, the Star Tribune reports. The fly onslaught has caused 80% of loons to leave their homes in Vilas County and 70% to leave in Oneida County. Now, researchers are worried the number of chicks born in the area will drop by about 30%.
