Watch: Mercury passing in front of the sun (as seen from Mars)

We’ve observed planets passing in front of the sun before, but only from our humble abode here on Earth. Now, NASA’s Curiosity rover has captured the first footage of the event occurring from its prime location on Mars. This video shows Mercury passing right in front of the star; it’s the faint, darkening spot that moves toward the upper right of the screen. The two other dark splotches are sunspots that are about the same size as Earth.
