Watch: Killer Sponges From the Deep Sea

Don’t be fooled by sea sponges; they’re not as innocent as their name suggests. Researchers have known for years that some of the animals are capable of carnivorous acts, like hooking small, shrimplike animals in their hairs and sucking the life from them. Now, scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and Canada have identified four new species of “killer sponges” that small crustaceans should fear. The findings, published this month in Zootaxa, include a videotape of the sponges with remnants of crustacean carcasses stuck in their hairs.
