Is the universe a hologram?

Physicists at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Illinois, have begun taking data in a controversial experiment that aims to test a wild idea known as the holographic principle. Crudely speaking, that notion suggests the amount of information that can be stored in a volume of spacetime is proportional to the surface area of that volume—an idea that stems in part from the study of black holes. Researchers working with the Fermilab holometer think they can test that idea by comparing two incredibly sensitive laser yardsticks called interferometers and looking for an ineluctable jitter between their measurements. However, inventors of the holographic principle argue the experiment won't test anything, as they told Science 2 years ago.
