Sites picked for comet landing

Planners for the European Space Agency’s Rosetta comet-rendezvous mission have picked five potential sites for a planned mid-November landing on the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Sites must be flat and smooth enough for the mission’s Philae lander to touch down on, bright enough to power its solar cells, and likely to provide a wealth of information about 67P’s fissured, boulder-strewn terrain and gas-spewing regions. Three of the candidates are on the smaller lobe of the comet’s lopsided nucleus.
