Scientists rebuild ocean in the middle of desert

An artificial ocean in the Arizona desert is on the rise—again. A biosphere built there in 1991 by a team studying space colonization contains a 676,000-gallon ocean that once had a healthy coral reef. The project eventually collapsed, and now a University of Arizona marine biologist is planning to revive the waters with organisms like starfish, sea urchins, and horn sharks. The hope is that the artificial sea will eventually serve as a laboratory for other researchers and engineers, National Geographic reports.
