Russia reestablishes contact with space geckos

After a nerve-wracking 3 days for the geckos and fruit flies on board the satellite Foton-M4, the Russian space agency has announced that it has reestablished contact with the silent craft. Launched last week, communication was lost after just a few days and the fate of its passengers—five geckos, which would be filmed throughout the flight to see how microgravity affected their fertility and offspring; a load of fruit flies; mushrooms and microbes—was unknown. According to the Russian news agency, contact was made on 26 July and agency chief Oleg Ostapenko says: “We are sure that we will be able to conduct 90 percent of what we initially planned.”
