A black flamingo was spotted on Wednesday on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, The Independent reports. Scientists hypothesize that the bird’s color arises from a genetic condition that causes it to produce more of the pigment melanin than normal. The only other known sighting of a black flamingo in the wild happened last year in Israel. This bird, seen flanked by its rosier-hued companions and grazing on the banks of the Akrotiri Salt Lake, could be the same one, experts say.
