It looks like Mercury has caught World Cup fever. Astronomers have spotted a massive soccer ball on its surface that’s 44 kilometers across. All right, so it isn’t technically a soccer ball: It’s an old impact crater that’s been flooded with lava, leaving behind a circular impression and a pattern of narrow lanes within. The MESSENGER spacecraft, which orbits the planet, captured the image.
